Harvesting Marijuana Could Come With Stiff Penalties
Marijuana harvesters face stiff penalties for manufacture and distribution.
August 25, 2011 /Agriculture PR News/ -- The approach of autumn means one thing for Wisconsin farmers -- harvest season. For most farmers this means picking corn or soy beans, for others it means harvesting marijuana.
Following two busts of large-scale marijuana grow operations in the last two years, it appears that Wisconsin law enforcement officers are keeping a close watch on possible marijuana grow operations. Both busts involved the seizure of tens-of-thousands of marijuana plants -- with street values in the millions of dollars -- grown in remote corners of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in Northern Wisconsin.
Penalties for Growing Marijuana
A person, however, does not need to be a large-scale grower of marijuana to face stiff penalties in Wisconsin. Marijuana farmers who are accused of the manufacture or distribution of marijuana face progressively harsher penalties, including:
- Less than 200 grams (1-4 plants) -- Class I felony -- up to 3.5 years in prison and/or up to $10,000 fine
- 200 to 1,000 grams (5-20 plants) -- Class H felony -- up to 5 years in prison and/or up to $10,000 fine
- 1,000 to 2,500 grams (21-50 plants) -- Class G felony -- up to 10 years in prison and/or up to $25,000 fine
- 2,500 to 10,000 grams (51-200 plants) -- Class F felony -- up to 12.5 years in prison and/or up to $25,000 fine
- 10,000 grams or more (200 or more plants) -- Class E felony -- up to 15 years in prison and/or up to $25,000 fine
