Want Raw Milk? Buy Part of a Cow

Raw milk proponents believe they have found a way to legalize unpasteurized milk sales: allow people to buy a share of a cow or goat and claim the right to use the milk as owners.

November 02, 2010 /Agriculture PR News/ -- Raw milk proponents believe they have found a way to legalize unpasteurized milk sales: allow people to buy a share of a cow or goat and claim the right to use the milk as owners.

It will take state legislation to do it, but proponents believe they have the support of many raw-milk-supporting legislators and plan to win approval during the next legislative term.

The battle over raw milk usage has been elevated recently due to reported deaths and hospitalization of drinkers in Minnesota, Wisconsin and elsewhere.

Despite these incidents, many consumers believe it is a healthier option because it contains more nutrients and has a creamier and richer taste. They also say cheese, yogurt, butter, ice cream and sour cream made from raw milk tastes better than store-bought goods.

Wyoming prohibits the sale of raw milk.

Advocates for changing the law object to restrictions on their freedom to buy whatever foods they choose.

Raw milk usage has been associated with Salmonella, E. coli and brucellosis.
