Russian Agricultural Division: Altay farms maintain strong lead in spring sowings

Altay farms of PAVA agricultural arm are successfully nearing spring sowings completion facilitated by favourable weather

BARNAUL, RUSSIA, May 31, 2009 /Agriculture PR News/ -- PAVA agricultural arm RAD is moving ahead with the current spring sowing campaign, expanding the cultivated area. Farms of the Altay Territory have the lead in successful completion of the season, the company said.
Thus, Agrofirma Niva Ltd. has reported that it planted 1,000 ha of spring wheat and is now preparing 3,200 ha of soil for buckwheat sowings. Recently, the enterprise conducted additional fertilizing of 1,154 ha under winter crops.
Allac Ltd. has completed sowings of sunflower, bringing the planted area under this crop to 1,080 ha, and is actively conducting sowings of spring wheat. The projected wheat acreage in Allac stands at 3,200 ha, while the buckwheat area is pegged at 1,500. Moreover, since the company envisages to launch a cattle-breeding project in this farming unit, it has allocated a small-scale share of land to oats planting for fodder supplies.
"Allac Ltd. is setting the pace for the current campaign, and historically, this farm has provided one of the highest grain yields", says Alexander Kalashnikov, RAD CEO. "This year, we will significantly enlarge Allac acreage from 2,215 ha in 2008 to 6,980 ha. Overall, favourable weather conditions facilitated an excellent start for RAD's farming activities, which are totally in line with the schedule".
The essential factor which enables the company to boost acreage and productivity is the use of modern Western machinery and agronomic techniques - the fields of Russian Agricultural Division are cultivated with 'Lemken' disk harrows and sowing complexes from 'Salford' and 'Morris'; the system of GPS equipment has been installed. Besides, RAD farms have achieved maximum supplies of own elite seeds, with only a small share being bought from local operators.
