Farmers take their hats off to innovative agribusiness information portal

The world-first agricultural information, search and delivery system was showcased at the Australian Cotton Conference on the Gold Coast late last year and will launch officially in Australia in the coming months.

BULEIGH HEADS, AUSTRALIA, January 30, 2009 /Agriculture PR News/ -- The unique system, known as FarmPlus, was developed by online knowledge company InfoRM Knowledge Ltd, to benefit Australian farmers by providing streamlined access to agricultural industry research.

The system combines a search engine facility and content management service linked to key information providers, which will be provided to Australian agricultural advisors.

FarmPlus has aggregated information from more than 300 agricultural sites and information repositories, and now Australian farmers from all industries will be able to access R&D results quickly and easily.

Knowledge strategist Gordon Stone of the agribusiness consulting network, Corporate Development Institute, says the FarmPlus system is a revelation for the agricultural industry, as sourcing research information in the past involved 'meandering' through many different websites, publications, field days, brochures and technical manuals, all of varying quality.

"Growers are time poor so they want someone, often their trusted agribusiness advisor, to find information, make sense of it, explain its relevance to their business - and assist in making key decisions," Mr Stone said.

"They often know the information is 'somewhere' but first they have to find 'the somewhere' which can take up far too much valuable time - FarmPlus takes the guesswork and searching element away."

The site is different from other types of agricultural websites as it is not a news or sales site - it is focused on facilitating access to credible information that helps them run their business better. Original research, reports, outcomes and developments and researchers can also be accessed.

The launch of FarmPlus has attracted significant interest from the Government and institutional research and development sector, and has gained the attention of key media, commercial and educational players in Australian agribusiness.

Contract arrangements have already been formalised with research organisations, Horticulture Australia Limited and Cotton RDC, enabling their research to be accessed more easily through the FarmPlus knowledge portal.

FarmPlus co-founder Adrian Davis said the system had received universal acceptance and support from the agribusiness industry.

"This system will change the world of agricultural information as we know it - it is breakthrough knowledge to support the ongoing changes and breakthroughs in the industry" he said.

A delivery platform for FarmPlus has also been established with Landmark Operations Ltd and will be accessed via their agronomy consultants after the official Australian launch.

Landmark National Farm Services Manager Bruce Cairns said that FarmPlus will provide Landmark staff with an improved level of access to information.

"It staggers me how much agricultural production and natural resource management research information is available but how hard it is to access," Mr Cairns said.

"As the demographics of agriculture change - there are lot more information-seeking farmers and more pressure for advisers to be well informed. Farmers are turning to our agronomists and animal production specialists for this information especially with the gradual decline in advisory services by government."

"With research and information now available in such an accessible way, it improves our ability to be more informed, allowing us to provide greater value to clients."

An information session on FarmPlus and InfoRM Knowledge Ltd will be presented by Alchemy Innovation Development on Monday 2nd February 2009 at 6:30pm in Tamworth. It will be held at the Ground Floor Lecture Room, UNE Tamworth Centre, Peel House, 24 Fitzroy Street, Tamworth.

Attendance is free.
